After 12 straight wins, UVM’s men’s basketball fell to the University of Maryland Baltimore County 66 to 64, Feb. 22.

In the Cat’s previous contest against UMBC on Jan. 11, UVM won 74-50.

A victory tonight would have given the Catamounts the regular-season title.

Vermont head coach John Becker said he was disappointed in UVM’s playing.

“We just came out flat,” Becker said. “UMBC looked like the much hungrier team.”

The Catamounts struggled offensively and defensively in the loss.

Vermont shot 40% from the field as opposed to UMBC’s 56.4%.

The Cats also missed 4 free throws and had 8 turnovers in the game.

Senior forward Anthony Lamb led the Catamounts in scoring with 24 points in the loss. Junior guard Stef Smith put up 17 points as well.

Before the game, ESPN released win predictions in favor of the Catamounts with a 96.6% likelihood of victory.

“We got beat by a team tonight that just wanted it more,” Becker said.

UVM is now 22-7 overall and 12-2 in conference play.

Vermont’s next contest will be at the University of Massachusetts Lowell on Saturday, Feb. 29 at 5:30 PM.
